Over 10 years ago, June Millington and Anne Hackler established a
non-profit institute in Bodega, California called Institute
for the Musical Arts (I.M.A.)
which was formed to help teach women the art, craft, business and
techniques
of music. This means that there are more classes taught than just
singing,
song-writing and lyrics.
The Institute also helps produce, record and market music from modern
women composers and musicians. Women board members and advisers include
Cris Williamson, Trett Fure, Ferron, Bonnie Raitte, Leslie Ann Jones,
Linda
Tillery, Phoebe Snow and others.
Please see www.ima.org
During the past years - and now with a center in Goshen, Massachusetts,
IMA teaches (among other things):
Singing and voice studies
Lyrics/melody songwriting essentials
Drumming
(hand percussion to trap set)
Bass, rhythm guitar and lead guitar techniques
Modern electronic keyboard techniques
Vocal and instrumental harmonies
Modern simplified recording techniques (Intro to the studio)
Intro and Mid-level analog and digital recording techniques
Musical production
Recording/engineering
The business of music (copyright, publishing, performing)
The business of touring (booking, performing, traveling)
and many, many other courses - all specifically organized around teaching
women how to open their creativity and move quickly and comfortably
through the world while sharing that creative energy.
Cristian and I can think of no better tribute or remembrance for
Elizabeth than to offer a full scholarship for one deserving young woman
(chosen solely by June Millington and Anne Hackler) to attend a summer
session of the main I.M.A. Summer Music Camp. This is a 9-10 day
intensive, boarding experience that is known to really "light the
creative
fire" under many able-women and move both their personal and musical
process to the next levels.
This opportunity will be offered to 5 women over five years (yes, it may
extend past that) and will be called "The Elizabeth Papapetrou -
Motherheart - Scholarship".
All of us send our very best to you and we will be with you in the spirit
of love on November 9th.
